WHERE EVIL WAITS by Kate Brady

SHE'LL RISK EVERYTHING

Special prosecutor Kara Chandler is very good at her job, so good that a homicidal mastermind vows to kill her and everyone she cares about. Desperate to save herself and her son, Kara seeks out cartel hit man Luke Varn. The last time she dealt with Luke, she saw him beat the system and escape prison. But now, the most dangerous man she's ever met is the only one who can keep her alive.

HE'LL STOP AT NOTHING

Luke Varn isn't who he appears to be. After spending years in the criminal underworld, he seeks redemption and revenge. Yet when he sees the fear in Kara's eyes, he can't walk away. People around her are being murdered, and only he can help uncover the killer's motive. Now as danger closes in, Kara and Luke must trust each other with their darkest secrets - before the evil in their lives destroys them both.

Excerpt

His head came down. Kara gasped but his mouth smothered it, and she started to push back, then realized he wasn’t forcing her. He eased in close, his knife hand bracing against the top of the SUV while the other came to her cheek, warm and strong as his fingers threaded into her hair and he tipped back her head to better receive his kiss. A second later, she heard voices, people climbing up the path from the dock, their laughter choking to a halt when Kara and Luke came into sight.

Act like it.

Reality struck: It’s an act.

Her limbs loosened, her lips softened, and she gave in to the kiss. Varón slanted his mouth over hers, warm and mobile, and he pressed her against the hot metal of the SUV, marauding and suckling, the very scent and taste of him invading her senses. Frissons of sensation stirred to life at the center of her body. In the distance, the crunch of gravel changed direction— the intruders cutting a wider swath— even so, Varón didn’t stop. His tongue slipped out and traced the crease of her lips, seeking entrance.

A spear of sensation shot straight between her legs. Kara parted her lips and Varón was right there— filling her, possessing her, a tender, insistent invasion that made her knees wobble as his hand slid the length of her spine and pulled her close. She heard what might have been car doors opening and closing, then the hum of an engine coming to life, but the sounds didn’t matter. Her heartbeat deepened and her nipples rose against his chest, and when she reached up to grasp his shoulders, his muscles flexed and strained beneath her fingers. A groan resonated in his throat and his free hand smoothed down the side of her rib cage, his thumb brushing the outer curve of her breast and setting loose a cyclone of sensations whirling in her belly. Sensations she hadn’t felt for . . . forever.

His tongue left her mouth and he suckled her lips, then nuzzled her face to the side and trailed a path of fiery kisses down the curve of her jaw and up again. He stopped in the hollow just below her ear.

“They’re gone,” he whispered, his breath fanning warmth over her ear.

Kara went still. It’s an act, her brain chanted, and embarrassment soared in. She sank back against the SUV, unsure if she could stand on her own. He’d robbed her limbs of strength and her mind of every last thread of cognition, sucked the oxygen right out of her lungs. For one, steamy moment, she’d forgotten about feeling afraid and exhausted and confused, and instead had just been feeling. And for one insane moment, she’d wanted to let him keep going. Keep supporting her weight, keep shielding her from the world, keep kissing her as if he wanted to swallow her whole. Even now, after his proclamation that they were once again alone, his lips still breathed kisses against her temples as if he, too, was reluctant to let it end.

“Okay,” she breathed. “Then back up.” She slid her hands over his arms and laid them flat against his chest, a hot wall of iron. She managed to form a thought in spite of the craven lust that had left her feeling hollow and damp, and exerted just enough pressure that he straightened to allow an inch of space between them. His thumb grazed the corner of her mouth, his gaze snagging there.

“Good work,” he murmured, and brushed his lips against her temple. “Very convincing.”

She blushed deep red, grateful for the darkness. “I know how to act,” she said, and he finally stepped back.

“Apparently so.”

And that was that: a kiss that just about knocked her off her feet, from a murderer who held her life and her son’s life in his hands.

And for a moment, she hadn’t minded at all.

Follow My Blog Friday #183

If you are new to the FF fun, Feature and Follow Friday is a blog hop that expands your blog following by a joint effort between bloggers. Feature & Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, myself of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them "hi" in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Now to make this FF interesting we do a FEATURE blogger. If you are interested in becoming a Feature click on the drop down link above FEATURES and Features and Follow Friday and get on the waiting list!  It is also required, that if you participate you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee and Alison Can Read) and the two Feature blogs.

This Meme is hosted by Rachel from Parajunkee's View and Alison from Alison Can Read on Fridays.

Our Feature this week: Tash Brilliant Book Blog

When did you start blogging?

I started blogging nearly 2 years ago. I’m coming up to my 2 year blog birthday. I can’t believe I’ve been blogging for so long but I’ve loved every minute of it!

What is your favorite part of book blogging?

My favourite part of blogging is talking to like minded people about books; so many people don’t read any more so it’s great that I can talk to people who share my love of books, reading and blogging.

What type of books do you mainly blog about?

I mainly blog about teen books and the odd YA.

What is your favorite book(s)?

I have so many, my ultimate favourite books are The Fault in our Stars, The Hunger Games and Touch of Power.

What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

The best thing that has happened to me through blogging is the opportunities its given me. I’m only 14 but blogging has inspired me to start my career now, I’ve interviewed authors, started writing for newspapers and discovering some great new books.

Our Feature - Gizzimomo's Bookshelf

1. When did you start blogging?

Well I've been blogging for a while as I have a craft blog called Gizzimomo's Stitchy Place where I showcase my cross stitching and crafts and that has been up and running since September 2010. It's not your typical granny stitching but big complicated pieces, often featuring fantasy topics and are so much fun to do, sometimes you might even find me stitching a character/s from books and movies, as I have charts for characters from Lord Of The Rings, Game Of Thrones and Twilight!

The book blogging thing is pretty new, I only started the blog in December of last year but I had been thinking about doing it for a long time as my other passion besides needlework is books, I love them!

2. What is your favorite part of book blogging?

So far my favourite thing about book blogging is just having a medium to get all those things that books bring to you out into the open. I'm the only reader in my house so I don't having anyone real to talk to about what I think of books so the blog allows me to voice my thoughts and opinions.

3. What type of books do you mainly blog about?

I've been making a point this year of trying to widen my reading horizons so the blog is about all kinds of genres but my favourite genres will always be fantasy, paranormal, horror and historical fiction. I will never just focus one type of book as I simply just don't read one type of book so with my blog you'll get all sorts of things. This year so far we've had YA, crime, humour, horror, mystery and historical. it makes for a good mix!

4. What are your favorite books?

This is the most difficult question in the world for me as I've been reading since I first learnt to read and I'm now 38 so I have literally decades of books behind me and choosing just one book, or even just one series of books, is nigh on impossible. There are many books that I make a point of re-reading... often and the foremost of those is The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings which I consistently read every couple of year, just because I love the story and with the movies coming out it's rude not to brush up on the story before seeing the film isn't it?

5. What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

As I said book blogging is still very new to me so there hasn't been a lot of time for the good things to occur but since I started the book blog I have developed good relations with two fabulous publishers and I think I'm starting to make new friends now within the blogging community too. I think the best thing so far has to just be having the outlet to talk books to people who want to listen, that's pretty cool!

Question of the Week: Change the Plot. If you could, what book would you change the ending or a plot thread? Go ahead and do it ... change it.

I would change the plot thread of "Narcissus in Chains" by Laurell K. Hamilton.  I would get rid of the Ardeur, Micah and bring back the Triumvirate of Anita, Jean-Claude and Richard.

Blog #7: Starting a New Writing Day

In a recent blog I said that the hardest part of writing, for me at least, is getting off the starting blocks. It’s the same thing every darn morning: a new day, a new blank page, a new load of inertia. The easiest way I have found to break through the resistance is to read the previous day’s writing. Besides getting me ready for a new push, this reorients me to my story, ties me into where I left off, and reacquaints me with my characters. It’s also a chance to catch yesterday’s glitches. I’m not suggestion a rewrite every morning; that’s a formula for never finishing a manuscript. But when you read through your day-old production you will note rough spots that can be smoothed out with a word or a phrase. You will also find spots where you need to affix sticky notes because you think of something important to include in your eventual rewrite.

To make the exercise more profitable, try reading aloud. If you feel silly reading to an empty room, get over it. There’s a tremendous payoff here, particularly when you read dialogue. Here’s the key: reading aloud enables you to hear bad writing that a silent read would miss. If your tongue gets twisted up on a string of narrative, it’s almost certain that readers will find it clunky even when reading silently.

I sometimes take this a step further and read into a recorder that I play back over my next cup of coffee. If you try this, don’t get dramatic and try to ape the sounds and inflections that you want your characters to have. Why not? Because your readers will have no idea what you intended unless it shows up on the page. If it’s there, you won’t need to practice your acting talent to bring it out. Just read everything in a conversational tone, then listen and see if the beats you have inserted with the dialogue really do their job. This is particularly important with dialogue; you won’t really know whether it sounds like the spoken word until you hear it yourself.

Their safe new world is shattered when the second hit man, a relentless psychopath, captures Shelby’s little sister and uses her to lure Shelby and her lover into a middle-of-the-night showdown on an isolated Rocky Mountain battleground.

Excerpt:

“I'm coming out,” Vlad shouted. He stuck an arm through where the windshield's glass used to be and waved the long-barreled revolver with its laser sight. “Look at this. See? I'm tossing it.” He pitched the weapon in her direction. It landed roughly midway between them.

“The other one,” Shelby said. “The automatic.”

He held up the weapon and tossed it. “I'm unarmed. You won't shoot an unarmed man, will you?”

She waited with the Beretta centered on his windshield.

He stuck both hands out. “See? Nothing to fight with. I'm coming out.”

“Not all the way,” she said. “Head and shoulders, then stop. I have to know you're unarmed.”

“Whatever you say.” He wriggled through the broken wind¬shield, favoring the arm she had twisted.

“Stop,” she commanded when his shoulders were outside the vehicle. Keeping the pistol trained on him, she stood and hobbled close. Black smoke poured out through the windows. Orange flames danced inside. “Tell me again what you did to my friend in Arizona.”

“It's burning,” he said, desperation kicking his voice up to soprano.

“Describe once more how it felt in Arkansas, watching Elizabeth's eyes as she died.”

“You've got to let me out.”

“Why do I have to do that?”

His fingers dug into the soil, and he started pulling his body out of the wreck.

Aiming carefully, Shelby put a round through his shoulder, shattering the joint.

He muttered a low-pitched “Umph,” but kept wriggling, pulling with one arm.

She put a round in his other shoulder. With the Beretta lowered, she backed away from flames that were now spurting out the windows.

“Kill me,” he begged. “In God's name, kill me.”

“I could do that, but what if there's no hell?” She let the pistol hang loosely at her side. “This might be your only chance to burn.”

“Mercy,” he screamed. “Have mercy.”

She turned away and headed for the wrecked VW. His shrieking followed her, and she hesitated.

He screamed again.

Despising the weakness that compelled her, she turned back. He looked up at her and begged, “Shoot me. Don't let me burn.” She aimed at his head. Her finger tightened on the trigger, but she could not squeeze.

“Please,” he pleaded. “In the name of God, do it. Be merciful.”

My Review:

Iwaki Kyousuke and Katou Yoji are both popular adult film actors who are like oil and water.  They fight every time they are in the same room (it's quite hilarious!).  Both work as AV actors but want to become mainstream so they both are fighting for a role that will help them achieve their goal.  They start a very steamy and sexual relationship that changes their lives.

This manga has very explicit m x m sex scenes and each chapter has at least one sex scene (more the better, LOL!).
