Manga Review: Alice in the Country of Hearts, Vol. 4 [Paperback]

I've finished "Alice in the Country of Hearts Vol. 4" by QuinRose.

Product Description

This is a clever retelling of the "Alice in Wonderland" tale - manga-style! Sadness looms over Alice after Ace shows how life is treated in Wonderland. To cheer her up, Boris takes Alice to the amusement park, but when she comes home, Julius asks her if she wants to leave the clock tower. Where will Alice live now?

Language: English

ISBN-13: 978-1427818904

My Review:

This volume introduces new characters and a new game for Alice to play.  The volume opens with Alice and Boris going to the amusement park to finally use Gowland's unlimited pass to try out rides.  Some of the rides are too much for Alice and she faints.  Boris has a showdown with Ace the Knight of Hearts who thinks it would be interesting if he kills Alice.  Boris is hurt and warns Alice about Ace wanting to kill her. Alice and Ace come to an understanding.

We also see Nightmare talking to Julius about Alice living somewhere else.  Julius says Alice has the freedom to live where ever she wants.  He has a chat with Alice and she starts crying because she thinks he wants her gone.  He comforts her and she says she wants to stay there because she likes it there.

Invitations to the April Fools Balls are sent and this is when everyone can lie.  During this time seasons change instead of the time and everyone must attend friends and enemies put aside their differences and have a good time.  Nightmare arrives at the Clock Tower with a new character we are introduced too.  He's freezing since it's snowing so Alice goes visit all the different areas to check out the weather.  She meets Joker in the Circus forest.

UF Review: Dead Mann Walking: A Hessius Mann Novel [Paperback]

I've finished "Dead Mann Walking" the 1st book in his Hessius Mann series by Stefan Petrucha.

Product Description

After Hessius Mann was convicted of his wife's murder, suppressed evidence came to light and the verdict was overturned - too bad he was already executed. But thanks to the miracles of modern science Hessius was brought back to life. Sort of.

Now that he's joined the ranks of Fort Hammer's pulse-challenged population, Hessius attempts to make a "living" as a private investigator. But when a missing persons case leads to a few zombies cut to pieces, Hessius starts thinking that someone's giving him the run - around - and it's not like he's in any condition to make a quick getaway ...

ISBN-13: 978-0451464217

My Review:

Hessius is a PI and former cop who was wrongfully accused of killing his wife and executed.  He is brought back to life but he has memory problems.  He has a human assistant (Liveblood) Misty who patches him up when he's hurt and takes care of his daily needs.  He's hired to find a missing person so he travels to the Badland with his client to a factory which now house a large number of Chaks.  There is a rumor the man they are looking for is living there. Also a serial killer is killing Chaks by mutilating them and keeping their heads as trophies.

The zombies aren't your typical ones with a group that can function like a human while others are on the brink of being feral and others are feral.

I highly recommend this book if you like dark and gritty noir novels with horror elements and a very likeable and witty zombie PI.  If you don't have a strong stomach I advise you not to read this book when you are eating since it can be quite descriptive.

Thanks Stefan and Simon and Schuster for sending me this book to review, greatly appreciated!

ARC Review: The Hunter (Legend Chronicles 1) [Paperback]

I've finished "The Hunter" the 1st book in her Legend Chronicles series by Theresa Meyers.

Product Description

Colt Jackson has gotten his name on many a wanted poster with success in the family business: hunting supernaturals across the frontier. Lately, though, there's a sulphur stink in the wind and the Darkin population is exploding. A rift in the worlds is appearing. To close it, Colt will have to do the unthinkable and work with a demon to pass arcane boundaries no human alone can cross. Except when he summons his demon, he doesn't get some horned monstrosity: he gets a curvy redheaded succubus named Lilly, who's willing to make a bargain to become human again. He also gets Lilly's secret expertise on the machinations on the dark side of the rift. And her charm and cleverness help to get them out of what his silver-loaded pistol and mechanical horse can't. Of course, when all hell breaks loose, he might have to sacrifice his soul. But what's adventure without a little risk?

About the Author

The progeny of a slightly mad (NASA) scientist and a tea-drinking bibliophile who turned the family dining room into a library, Theresa Meyers learned early the value of a questioning mind, books and a good china teapot. A former journalist and public relations officer, she found far more enjoyment using her writing skills to pen paranormal novels in the turret office of her Victorian home. She's spent nearly a quarter of a century with the boy who took her to the Prom, drinks tea with milk and sugar, is an adamant fan of the television show Supernatural, and has an indecent love of hats.

My Review:

Colt's dad has tried to save him from the family business of hunting down supernaturals but when Colt is attacked at 14 yrs. old his dad trains him on how to destroy the Darkin.  Now at 24 he's trying to track down his dad's pieces of a book while both of his older brothers are no longer in the business.  The Darkin are expending and the only way to prevent them from escaping is to put the three pieces of paper together and closing the gate.  He needs demon to help him and he summons a sexy succubus who will test his control and makes him break all the Hunter rules.

This is my first steampunk novel and I wasn't sure what to expect!  I really loved how all the brothers Colt, Remington and Winchester are all named after guns.  Glad both his older brother helped Colt when he need them though they aren't as close as they were as kids.

Really enjoyed the romance between Colt and Lilly because it was slowly developed while they learned to trust one another.  It was very funny reading about Colt struggling with his attraction to Lilly and his inner turmoil about breaking the Hunter rules.

Marley Turlock his inventor friend was a hoot and I really enjoyed reading about all his new inventions.

I’m a 30-something avid reader, determined to share the published word. I’m a dreamer and freely admit to sometimes preferring the company of fictional characters to real people. I’m perfectly content to spend my time in solitude with a great book. I love to write, read, and otherwise exercise my creative abilities.I was once asked why I read. Really, the only answer I can give to that is, how can I NOT read? I’d much rather read than breathe. For reals. Same deal for writing. It’s just a part of me and always will be.

Reading in the Corner

HTML code:

"Hi, y'all! My name is Jessi and I blog over at ""Reading in the Corner."" Why did I start blogging? Well, because I failed at gardening, sewing, scrapbooking, cooking/baking, cleaning, and all things domestic. Okay, but seriously, I started blogging in February 2011 because I was reading so many books and I HAD to share them with someone (even if my only followers were my sister and my husband)! Since then, FF and many other memes have helped me discover the book blogging community and make so many blogger friends in the last 6 months! It's been really exciting for me to get to know you through your blogs.

Currently, I am a very BUSY person. I work a full-time job in academic library administration, a part time job in public library public services, and I take on graduate school in my spare time. (Can you guess my major?) In all my other spare time, you can generally find me curled up in some part of my little house in the country with my husband, two cats, and a good book. I currently have a minor obsession with YA dystopian and YA PNR novels, but at the moment I'm reading ""outside the box"" for my book club with ""Akata Witch"" by Nnedi Okorafor and ""Stuck in Neutral"" by Terry Trueman."

Q. If you could have dinner with your favorite book character, who would you eat with and what would you serve?

I would love to have dinner with Zsadist, Bella and Nella and we would have a feast.

I would also love to have dinner with Zarek and we would have steak and seafood.

18 and Over Book Blogger #12

18 and Over Book Blogger Follow is a weekly feature that begins on Fridays and runs through the weekend hosted by Crystal from Reading Between the Wines and Kelly at Secrets of a Book Lover.

The 18 Over Book Blogger Follow is a Friday blog hop with the objective to find and visit other book blogs that share the same interest as you, namely books geared towards the 18 and over crowd, and make new friends!

How to join in:

You should run a book blog that features and reviews mostly adult reads, some Y.A.’s are okay but 18 &  Over adult reads should be your majority.

Make a separate post for the 18 & Over Book Blogger Follow on your blog.

Copy the html for the button above and place it at the top of your post.

List and answer the ‘Question of the Week.’

Place your name and blog title in the linky below and the url for a direct link to your post

Visit the other blogs on the list. If you like what you see make sure to leave a comment and follow so the blog owner knows you stopped by and can return the favor. Following each blog is not mandatory but I know it is always appreciated, and if someone comments saying they’re a new follower it’s polite to follow back. It’s always nice to spread the 18 and Over Book Blog love!

Question of the Week:

If you could dress-up a favorite book character for Halloween, who would it be & what would they wear?

I would dress up Bones in a Zorro costume.

Then I would dress up Zarek in a Roman costume and then I would hightail it out of there before he threw lightning bolts at me.

I would dress Zsadist head to toe in leather.

Book Blogger Hop #22

Book Blogger Hop

This Meme is hosted by Jennifer from Crazy for Books on Fridays.

RULES:

Your blog should have content related to books, including, but not limited to book reviews.

1.  Before you add your link, you must post about the Hop on your blog and link directly back to THIS POST (not just my domain, but the direct post for the Hop).  The linky is going to review the link that you enter in your submission, looking for a link to this post on your blog.  If it doesn’t find one, your link will not be approved.  This is called back linking and I had to institute it because people were taking advantage of the Hop and getting some free advertising without promoting the Hop themselves.  You can read more about this here.

2. While you are creating your post, answer the following question (there’s a new prompt each week)!

“What is your favorite Halloween costume?

Even if you don’t celebrate, what kinds of costumes do you like?”

My favorite Halloween costume was my Cleopatra outfit in high school.  The kind of costumes I like are the sexy but tasteful maid and cop outfits.

3. Now it’s time to enter your blog link into the linky below (after the list of instructions!).

Theresa Myers The Hunter Blog Tour with Guest Post

I am so excited to have Theresa Myers here to to talk about 5 Ways to Steampunk Your Halloween in a guest post here on Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Reviews.

Theresa is currrently touring to promote her new book The Hunter which features hunky paranormal bounty hunter and a sexy succubus.

Thanks so much Entangled Publishing for connecting us on this blog tour!

Please take it away Theresa!

Five Ways to Steampunk Your Halloween

With Halloween literally just days away, you might be looking for something fun and different to do this year. Why not try steampunk?

Some say Steampunk is what happens when Goths discovered brown, but it’s really much more than that. Steampunk is neo-Victorian science fantasy. I’d say science fiction, but really fantasy is a more apt description because so many of the inventions, like the lightening-powered air ship in Stardust, or the Aetheographic transmitters in Souless, have very little to do with actual science, and owe a far greater debit to imagination. Still confused? Think H.G. Wells’ Time Machine or Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or that Will Smith movie, Wild Wild West. Steampunk happens in a setting similar to the Victorian age, where there can be fantastic things( computers, automatons, air ships, and paranormal creatures) as long as it all happens with Victorian era components (meaning no plastic, transistors or electronics).

So what can you do to Steampunk your Halloween?

1. Pick a Fun Costume! The great thing is you can be so many different things. Why be just a plain pirate, when you could be an airship pirate instead? What about a western cardsharp with a clockwork card-dealing device up his sleeve? An intrepid explorer with a pith helmet and goggles, or perhaps a gentleman or lady of high society with an exquisite top hat and cane? Need more ideas: Check out the photos at http://www.steamcon.org/SCII/gallery.php?a=1

2. Get Into the Spirit! Victorian’s were nuts about the paranormal. They held sĂ©ances. They held mummy unwrapping parties. They invited tarot card readers, palm readers and spiritualists to their dinner parties. If you’re hosting an event, add a little more of the supernatural into it in Victorian fashion by having a Steampunk-style activity. Maybe you can unwrap a mummy (blow up doll wrapped in toilet paper or paper towels) to find prizes. Trick is to do it blindfolded! Or perhaps have a Magic 8 Ball or invite someone who reads tarot cards to the party.

3. Set the Stage! Steampunk isn’t just a clothing style, it’s an aesthetic/sub-culture. There’s music, dĂ©cor, food, art, literature and so much more that make up what is Steampunk today. Try downloading some Steampunk Band music for your party, like Abeny Park, Clockwork Dolls, Unwoman, Panic! At the Disco, Voltaire or any of them listed at http://steampunk.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_steampunk_bands

4. Make some Treats! Try making some scones. Here’s some pumpkin spice scones with an irresistible ginger molasses icing http://pinchmysalt.com/2007/10/18/pumpkin-spice-scone-recipe/ and don’t forget Victorian’s loved tea too! Consider trying a couple of different flavors of hot tea served with a dollop of half-and-half and sweetner, or, if you prefer something with a little more kick, what about a hot buttered rum http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/hot-buttered-rum-mix/detail.aspx

5. Celebrate Like it’s 1899! Not interested in going out or hosting a big party? Turn out the lights, burn some candles or light a few oil lamps, and read a great book, or play board games or charades with the family.

My Review:

Gaby Summerhill's husband Peter has been dead for three years and her family haven't had Christmas since then.  Now she's getting married on Christmas Day but her children and even her groom doesn't know who! So finally Gaby and family will spend Christmas together.   She's been proposed to by three different men who is her best friends.

Loved getting to know Gaby and her four grown children Claire, Emily, Lizzie and Seth.  Each is dealing with problems of their own.  Claire is in an abusive relationship with her husband who torments her mentally and psychically.   She finally has had enough and kicks him to the curb but their children adores him.  Her son Gus is smoking weed and drinking and getting drunk just like his dad.

Emily is married to a successful doctor but is passed over as a partner at her Law Firm.  She quits and now has to come up with a job strategy.

Lizzie is dealing with her husband Mike's cancer and trying to keep up an optimistic outlook for their eight-year old daughter Tallelah.

Seth is dealing with a rejection from his publisher and his girlfriend tries to cheer him up while support him too.  He feels like a failure.

This was a very fast read and I finished it in a couple of hours.  Loved how close the family is and how they support each other in time of need.  Really surprised that Mike is such a jokester while suffering a terminal illness.

Thanks Hachette Book Group for sending me this book to review, greatly appreciated!

Manhwa Review: My Boyfriend is a Vampire, vol. 1-2 [Paperback]

I've finished "My Boyfriend is a Vampire" Ominus Vols. 1 - 2" by Han Yu-Rang.
Product Description

Vampires like you’ve never seen before in this 320 page genderbender shoujo comedy.

My Boyfriend is a Vampire is an all new shoujo comedy series in the vein of Vampire Knight, presented in two-volumes-in-one omnibus format. Seven Seas will release the entire angsty series across seven low-priced omnibus editions.

Being beautiful is never easy, especially if you’re an eighteen year old boy like Ryu who is constantly mistaken for a girl because of his delicate good looks. Ryu is, in fact, anything but delicate. He is the ringleader of a group of tough kids in an all boy’s school, and he’s quick to beat the living daylights out of anyone who even hints that he resembles a girl.

If that wasn’t hard enough for a regular teenage guy to cope with, his life is about to take a shocking turn for the worse. When Ryu stumbles upon strange happenings in the forest, he gets sucked into a world of vampire intrigue and sinister romance that he never knew existed. And he learns that there are worse things than being turned into a vampire: being turned into a girl?!

About the Author

Han Yu-Rang, the author/artist of My Boyfriend is a Vampire, is a prolific Korean comics creator whose works focus on shoujo themes.

My Review:

In Vol. 1 when we first met Ryu we see him staggering and stumbling around dripping blood when he finally collapses.  People are staring at him when finally a group of friends check on him and realize he is dead with no heartbeat.  They call the police and when they arrive Ryu suddenly rises up and runs home.  He takes a shower when he realizes he has turned into a girl and freaks out.

In Vol. 2 we find out what happened to Ryu and the circumstances that lead up to that night (he was bitten by a vampire).  We learn a little backstory when Ryu was young and he used to be beaten up by bullies because they thought he was a girl.  He was rescued Sang Yang who paid for his tae-kwon do classes to teach him to protect himself.  In the present day we find out that Ryu is the chief of the local gang and that is how he meet Rei Parks his first in command.  Rei tells him there is a serial killer killing teen age girls near a popular hangout and other gang members are being beaten up.

His friend Sang ask Ryu to pretend to be his girlfriend to help him get rid of a persistent suitor.  She wants to proof that Ryu and Sang are together or else she will steal him away.  This part was very funny because Ryu put on a wig and even kissed Sang because he was all worked up.

We are also introduced to important vampire characters and a legend about a vampire and a human women.

I was laughing every time Ryu got hit on and his reaction to the situations (he loves to beat up people who mistake him for a girl and he would start stripping by taking off his T-shirt to prove he's a guy).

I highly recommend this gender bending comedy manhwa if you like vampires with personalities and try to kill each other.

USA Today bestselling author Janelle Denison turns up the heat in her latest novel about the men of The Reliance Group, who mix business and pleasure with reckless abandon . . .

WILL KEEP THEM COMING BACK FOR MORE . . .

Zoe Russo has met all types of men on the Vegas strip.  But when Sean pays a visit to her casino boutique, she knows she's in luck.  They share an immediate, irresistible attraction, and for the first time in her life she's found a man she thinks she can trust.  But when Zoe stumbles onto the truth about Sean and his reasons for persuing her, she can't help but question his feelings for her.  Is he for real, or has she been a fool for love?  Until now, nothing has prepared her for the thrill, and risk, of gambling on love.

My Review:

Sean O'Brien works for the Reliance Group as a bartender in a Casino.  Caleb Roux assigns Sean the job of investigating Grant Russo who bilked millions of money from investors in a money scam including Sean's father.  His father is in jail serving a 12 yr. sentence resembling the Ponzi scheme.

Sean comes up with idea the easiest way to their target is to seduce his daughter Zoe to extract information. There is an instant attraction between the two when they first lay eyes on each other and soon Sean feels guilty about his deception.  He's fallen for Zoe but will she trust him once she finds out the truth?

When she learns about Sean's deception she agrees to help the Reliance Group to prove her father's innocence and to go on her way and have nothing more to do with Sean.  During their adventure Zoe falls in love with Sean.

This second book in the Reliance Group series is very fast paced and high octave action with two very likeable main characters.  The love scenes are very steamy.

My Review:

Roan is cursed to lived in the Shadowlands and known as the Goblin King.  He has a human heart and cursed to love everything gold.  He's slowly losing his sanity to become one of the goblins he hates with a passion!  When he meets Eliza he feels something he's not used to and will she be his salvation?

Eliza is in a terrible situation and she calls on the Goblin King to help her get out of it.  He takes her to the Shadowlands and plans on keeping her and making her his Queen.  Will she accept?  When she was a teenager he came to her rescue.

This book is a dark and sinister adult telling of a bleak and dismal place which I really enjoyed reading about.  The author did a good job of creating and describing a place no one would want to live in.

Dai was an interesting character with his sarcastic wit and we have something in common our love of books.

Book Blogger Hop #21

“What is your favorite type of candy?”

My favorite candies are Mr. Big, Oh Henry, Kit Kat, Crispy Crunch, Caramel, M and M's and Smarties.

3. Now it’s time to enter your blog link into the linky below (after the list of instructions!).

Book Savvy Babe

I am Heather, I am a 28 year old mom. I have 2 small boys, aged 6 and 3, and they keep me busy. While I always loved reading, I started really reading a lot a few years ago when I was stuck at home with the babies. After joining online book clubs and meeting other book lovers, I started blogging too. I live in Southern California, near a bunch of wineries, so I love wine tasting! Reading a good book and enjoying a glass of vino is my favorite thing.I read a variety of genres, but most of the time, I prefer paranormal books. My current favorite book is Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning. I am trying to read the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian right now, in between review books. I never imagined how much fun book blogging could be, and in the last 6 months that I have been blogging, I have grown to love it!

The Bursting Bookshelf

I am a bookaholic whose friends got tired of hearing about my latest read. I decided to make a book blog to get my bookish opinions out there for other book lovers to read and the ball just got rolling from there. I mainly read YA fiction, and my favorite books are by far the Harry Potter series and The Hunger Games series. Currently I am hooked to dystopian books and I try and read as many of them as possible.

Q.What superhero is your alter-ego?

I have never been much into superheroes but I admire Bella from J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

They live in Bronxville, New York, with their four boys, two dopey dogs, and an extremely loud bird. Life is busy, but never dull.

My Review:

When Samantha fails as an artist in New York she decides to move back home and live with her Nonie.  Her ex-boyfriend Roger accosts her and then something happens and he runs screaming.

When she arrives home she notices Malcolm her dreamy next door neighbor.  Soon he is explaining to her about her heritage that she is part Amoveo a race of shapeshifters.  She's the last of the Wolf clan and she can turn into a black wolf.  She's also his mate!  She doesn't believe him at first but as she witnesses strange happens she starts to believe.

Malcolm is the last of the Eagle clan and he has waited for Samantha to come back home.  He has always known she was his fated Mate since they have connected in their dreams.  He needs to bond with her because without his mate he is slowly losing his powers.

We also learn of the Caedo family who have hunted the Amoveo since the end of time and were the ones who killed Samantha's parents in cold blood.

I really liked how Malcolm was patient with Samantha to accept her heritage and as his mate.  Glad he didn't force the issue and he took her feelings in consideration.

Loved learning about the Amoveo legend and I can't wait till Untouched comes out next year!

4/5
